UofT Interprofessional Education University of Toronto

Introduction

A community of practice (CoP) around interprofessional care (IPC) was fostered throughout the Catalyzing and Sustaining Communities of Practice Around Interprofessional Care (CCIC) project, funded by the HealthForceOntario Interprofessional Mentorship, Preceptorship, Leadership and Coaching (IMPLC) fund (February - July 2007). This CoP has now been formalized to meet on a regular basis, to continue the momentum and collective work with IPC in Toronto. The CoP is jointly sponsored by the Centre for IPE and the Office of Continuing Education and Professional Development.

An inaugural meeting was held in October 2007 that explored how a formal CoP can forward the work around IPC/IPE in Toronto. They began to create a clear mandate for the CoP, determine the meeting structure for the months ahead, and identify topics of interest to explore as a group in regular meetings or workshops in the coming year.

There was high interest in developing this CoP as a learning forum, with three major sets of activity:

  1. Learning from each other's work
  2. Developing new knowledge and ideas as a community
  3. Potentially developing cross-organization projects or initiatives

Meeting Structure

Building on the suggestions made, the CoP meetings will be held every six weeks, for 2.5 hours. The first hour will be devoted to sharing a specific initiative or piece of knowledge, with the remaining time spent in interactive discussion of some of the questions identified as keys to successfully implementing IPC.

If you would like to attend a meeting, or learn more about the CoP, please contact Belinda Vilhena.
